To be legal instruments, some notes had to 2 penny duty stamp from the Board of Inland Revenue. Most notes were sold as souvenirs in form of cancelled and specimen notes, rather than as redeemable banknotes. |

|  | Guernsey Overprints Following the occupation of the Channel Island by Germany during WWII there was an acute shortage of coinage in the island and permission was given by the Germans for the distribution of small denomination banknotes, subject to the withdrawal from circulation of an equivalent amount of Guernsey and Bank of England notes. These Bank of England notes were overprinted "Withdrawn from circulation September 18th 1941" and "Withdrawn from circulation November 10th 1941." |
