The Northern Bank began life as a private partnership in Belfast in 1809, and became the joint stock Northern Banking Company in 1824, at which time it was the only joint stock banking company anywhere in the British Isles apart from Scotland.

Branches outside Belfast were established from 1835 onwards, and in 1888 the bank opened its first office in Dublin by acquiring the business of the private bankers Ball & co. Five years earlier the Northern had adopted limited liability, thereby becoming the Northern Banking Company Limited, and it shortened its name to Northern bank Limited.

The Midland Bank (which already owned the Belfast Banking Company) acquired the share capital of the Northern Bank in 1965, and in 1970 merged its 2 Irish Banks in the name of the Northern. In order to raise capital following a disastrous investment in the USA, the Midland sold the Northern Bank in 1987 to National Banks Australia Limited, who in turn sold it to Danske Bank, Copenhagen.
